Existential safety is honestly one of my favorite subjects, and I could nerd out about it forever. Why? Because it's what I learned when I was in the depths of hell and nothing in my life felt stable or safe (For some perspective: I could not even trust my body to fall asleep without having a MAST cell reaction that was on the caliber of going into anaphylactic shock). We talk a lot about cultivating safety in the nervous system in this work of healing, because in order to grow sustainably we must re-establish safety (otherwise "growth" just looks like a roller coaster of crashing and burning and never really gaining traction in the big goals of life). But what is safety truly? In the newly forming Body & Soul Sanctuary, we are learning about how to build the soil of safety in our nervous system and in our life. One way I define safety is as the state of compassion as a default state. So, building good soil in our nervous system means having capacity to meet all of our reactions and survival states with compassion and curiosity. No small feat! But trust me, if I didn't learn to cultivate this, I likely would not even be alive today. Everything I learned about how to regenerate my body, mind, and spirit came from the soil of this compassion. And a Safety greater than what can be counted on by conditions of this world. How do you find stability, safety, and the capacity for non-judgmental compassion even in the most turbulent and shape-shifting of times? Here's this week's 8-minute video of me talking on the subject: Comments are closed.
